Wangechi Mutu’s work can be described as organic and intuitive. She uses her own histories, the small creatures around her, and her own feelings as infinite inspiration.

This piece from Mutu’s Storm King exhibition relies mainly on form and texture to convey its purpose to the audience. The form of the object is the most essential, as it combines a female body with that of an alligator, to bring attention to the power of women. The texture is important in combining the two creatures, as well as conveying that they have a shared energy.

Many of Mutu’s works, such as this one, rely heavily on color. She uses prominently earthy tones with smaller accents of bright colors, mirroring the pallets found in nature. Her color use draws the viewer right back to nature.
